Castanets are percussion instruments that are held in the hand and used to produce clicks for rhythmic accents or a rattling sound of a rapid series of clicks. Although the origin of the castanets is not known, in Europe they are primarily a dance instrument associated with flamenco in Spain. Orchestral castanets are attached to a handle. The player shakes the handle, striking the shells on the free hand.
