The double bass (or contrabass) is the largest member of the the violin family and is known for producing very low-pitched tones. The double bass is a very large instrument; its size helps it to achieve such low notes through the use of a long string over a large air column. Due to it’s size, the double bass must be played standing or seated in a tall stool. Both bowed and plucking methods are commonly used to play the double bass in classical, jazz, rock and country music genres.
