The name Buffalo Drum was applied to any drum traditionally made from one of several types of animal skin, such as buffalo, cow, horse, or deer, stretched tightly over wood. The pitch of the drum would fluctuate based on weather conditions. Modern Buffalo Drums are made with synthetic skin to improve the sound of the drum and prevent variations in sound. These drums have been used by the Native Americans for centuries in healing ceremonies, meditation, prayer, dancing and singing.
