The cello (formally, the violoncello) is a four-string instrument that is played while seated. It is the second-largest instrument in the the violin family, second only to the double bass. It is an important component of the string section of an orchestra and is also used as a solo instrument in chamber music. The notes on a cello sound much lower and richer than its smaller family members.
Due to its large size, it can be a challenge for young students to properly play and transport, but it is still common in many music education programs in middle school and beyond.
