The gong is a percussion instrument consisting of a disk, usually with upturned edges or more in diameter in the modern orchestra. It is often made of bronze, and struck with a felt- or leather-covered mallet or drumstick. Although the origins of the gong date back to the 6th century, it was first used in Western music in the funeral march of Gossec’s Mirabeau (1791). Since then, it has been present in European-type orchestras, but is used sparingly.
Everyone enjoys the sound of the gong. The gong can be featured on a stand or hung from a cord. It also makes a beautiful decor piece.
