The kalimba — dubbed the thumb piano — is a modern version of the African mbira. The metal keys attached to the top of it produce different sounds, just like a piano would. To play the kalimba, its reeds or tines are plucked with the thumb to set off a group of vibrations that resonate within the instrument’s sound box. The lower notes often appear in the middle with the higher ones on the two outer edges.
