This predecessor of the Piano, the Kanoune string instrument is referred to in 10th century Arabic writings. Presently, it's a popular musical instrument throughout North Africa, the Middle East, Turkey, Persia and even Eastern Europe. To play, the musician rests the Kanoune on their knees and pluck with metal finger picks. The metal sharpening levers alter the pitch of individual strings by eighth or quarter tones.
