The pennywhistle, or “tin whistle”, is a simple six-holed woodwind instrument. It can be described as an end blown fipple flute, putting it in the same category as the Native American flute, and many other woodwind instruments found in traditional music.
The term "penny whistle" was thought up on the streets of Dublin in the late 1500s because of the whistles' frequency among the beggars in Ireland.
