Sitars
The sitar is the most popular instrument of North Indian classical music. It can have up to four main strings, three or four drone strings and thirteen sympathetic, or resonating, strings. There are a couple of different versions that are available today. The sitar is made of seasoned gourd and wood and produces a very rich sound with complex harmonic resonance.
It is predominantly used in Hindustani classical, and has been present in Hindustani classical music since the middle ages. It was also used in popular American Jazz in the 1950's.
